This scholarship targets a specific population in need: students who overcome adversity to get into college, but whose scholarships are only enough to help them pay for their freshman year. The size of the award takes into account that students need help paying for more than just tuition, and the award sticks with them until they graduate—an example of our goal of getting students through school, not just to school.

After the tragic attacks of 9/11, America came together. One of the responses was the Families of Freedom fund. Today, this scholarship still promises that the children affected by parents who were killed or severely injured due to the recovery efforts on 9/11 could get financial assistance for college.

Our mission stretches nationwide, but we are keenly aware that some of the biggest impact happens locally. That's why, with Dollars for Scholars, we harness the power of thousands of volunteers and donors empowering students in their own backyards—so that they can be the next community change-makers.

We provide students quick support for life emergencies, allowing them to persist and complete school. Emergency grants are a direct response to a need we heard from students and a reflection of something we believe—that a car repair, a child-care issue, or sudden illness should not be the thing that ends a promising college career.

Dollars Not Displaced by Colleges
Since 2015
Students and families are surprised—and usually upset—when they realize some colleges reduce their financial aid packages when the student earns private scholarship dollars—a practice called “financial aid displacement” or “award displacement.” Students work hard for their scholarships, and we believe they should receive the full amount of their award.
That’s why we partner with colleges and universities through our Collegiate Partners program—where schools make a commitment to not displace private scholarship dollars.
Collegiate Partners
We diligently track demographics because it helps us improve the diversity of those we help. We have the power to build equity, diversity and inclusion into the fabric of our organization — and design meaningful work that elevates and more purposefully focuses on effective, direct actions.

Year in School
Year in School
Don’t picture the typical four-year experience only. As the workforce becomes more diverse, so do the ways of getting there. It’s why we’re supporting students pursuing all different paths, including 2-year, 4-year, and vocational/technical training programs.
School Type
There is no such thing as a “traditional” student anymore. That’s why we have one passion—every student.

There’s only one way to work with Scholarship America — as a team. We provide the data and direction our partners need to make smart, informed, empowered decisions. We manage resources smartly. We make evidence-based recommendations—and give peace of mind throughout the process.
We believe that a shared commitment will always reach a greater good. And we’re all about making the process better—never settling for doing “just enough”.
